Here are the general steps to make pet food using a twin-screw extruder:
Prepare raw materials
- Select high-quality ingredients like grains (corn, wheat, etc.), proteins (chicken meal, fish meal, etc.), fats (vegetable oil, animal fat), vitamins, minerals, and water.
Weigh and mix
- Weigh the raw materials accurately according to the formula and mix them evenly in a mixer.
Feed the extruder
- Put the mixed raw materials into the feeder of the twin-screw extruder.
Extrusion processing
- The twin screws rotate to transport and knead the materials. The temperature, pressure, and screw speed can be adjusted according to the characteristics of the materials and the requirements of the product. The high temperature and pressure cause the starch in the materials to gelatinize and the proteins to denature, forming a specific structure.
Shaping and cutting
- After extrusion, the pet food is formed into the desired shape through a die. Then, it is cut into appropriate lengths by a cutter.
Drying
- Put the extruded pet food in a dryer to remove moisture to the appropriate level, usually about 10% or less.
Coating
- Some pet foods may require coating with oils, flavors, or other substances to improve palatability and appearance.
Packaging
- After cooling, package the pet food in appropriate packaging materials and store it in a dry and cool place.
